Course description

Course Overview: AP Physics 1 is an introductory, algebra-based course that introduces students to fundamental principles of physics. This course covers topics such as kinematics, dynamics, circular motion and gravitation, energy, momentum, simple harmonic motion, mechanical waves, and electric circuits. Through hands-on laboratory experiments, collaborative activities, and theoretical instruction, students will develop a solid understanding of these concepts and their applications in the physical world. AP Physics 1 emphasizes critical thinking and problem-solving skills, preparing students for the AP exam and laying a strong foundation for further studies in science, engineering, and related fields.

Key Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand and apply principles of kinematics to describe motion.
  2. Analyze forces and their effects on objects using Newton's laws of motion.
  3. Investigate circular motion, gravitation, and orbital mechanics.
  4. Explore concepts of energy and its conservation in mechanical systems.
  5. Study momentum and its conservation in collisions and interactions.
  6. Analyze simple harmonic motion and mechanical waves.
  7. Understand basic concepts of electric circuits and their components.

Requirements: Students should have completed or be concurrently enrolled in a high school algebra course. A basic understanding of trigonometry is beneficial but not required. Access to a computer with internet connectivity and a scientific calculator is necessary for completing assignments and projects.

Outcomes: Upon completion of AP Physics 1, students will:

  1. Demonstrate proficiency in applying physics principles to solve problems.
  2. Conduct and analyze laboratory experiments to deepen understanding of physical concepts.
  3. Communicate scientific ideas and findings effectively through written and oral presentations.
  4. Develop critical thinking skills necessary for scientific inquiry and problem-solving.
  5. Be fully prepared to succeed in the AP Physics 1 exam and pursue further studies in physics or related fields.

Certification: Students who successfully complete the course will receive a certificate of completion, confirming their mastery of AP Physics 1 content and their readiness for the AP exam. This certification recognizes their achievement in understanding fundamental physics concepts and their ability to apply these concepts in various contexts, enhancing their academic credentials for college admissions and future career opportunities in science and engineering.
