Course description

Course Overview: AP Physics C: Mechanics is an intensive, calculus-based course designed to provide students with a deep understanding of the principles of mechanics. This course covers a wide range of topics including kinematics, Newton's laws, work, energy, power, momentum, rotation, and gravitation. Through a combination of theoretical instruction and hands-on laboratory experiments, students will develop the analytical skills necessary to solve complex physical problems. This course prepares students for the AP Physics C: Mechanics exam and lays a strong foundation for further studies in physics and engineering.

Key Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand and apply the principles of kinematics to describe motion.
  2. Utilize Newton's laws to analyze the dynamics of particles and systems.
  3. Explore the concepts of work, energy, and power and their interrelationships.
  4. Analyze the principles of linear and angular momentum and their conservation.
  5. Study rotational motion and the dynamics of rigid bodies.
  6. Examine the principles of gravitation and their applications to orbital mechanics.

Requirements: Students should have completed or be concurrently enrolled in a calculus course, as calculus is heavily utilized in this course. A strong foundation in introductory physics is also recommended. Access to a computer with internet connectivity and a scientific calculator is required.

Outcomes: Upon completion of the AP Physics C: Mechanics course, students will:

  1. Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the core concepts of mechanics.
  2. Apply calculus to solve complex physical problems.
  3. Conduct and analyze laboratory experiments to reinforce theoretical concepts.
  4. Communicate scientific ideas and findings effectively.
  5. Be fully prepared to take and succeed in the AP Physics C: Mechanics exam.

Certification: Students who successfully complete the course will receive a certificate of completion, confirming their mastery of AP Physics C: Mechanics content and their readiness for the AP exam. This certification signifies their proficiency in applying calculus-based physics principles, enhancing their academic portfolio for college admissions and future studies in physics or engineering.

While the course promises a deep dive into mechanics and offers both theoretical and practical components, it fell short in a few areas. The pacing was overwhelmingly fast, leaving little time for students to grasp complex concepts thoroughly. Additionally, hands-on experiments were limited, which hindered the application of theory to practice. Lastly, the emphasis on calculus felt excessive for students needing a stronger conceptual foundation.
